How Clean Water Saves Lives

Access to clean water and basic sanitation world wide could save approximately 16,000 lives a week. 43% of those lives are children under five years old. More accessible clean water will also especially benefit women and girls. Today African women spend 40 billion hours a year walking to get water. Less time spent collecting water means more time for education and clean water and proper toilets at schools means that teenage girls don’t have to stay home for a week out of every month. Women and girls are able to start businesses and improve their homes when their community has access to water. (See our sources)

“Until nobody on earth dies from dirty water…”

Scott Harrisoncharity: water was founded in 2006 by NYC event promoter Scott Harrison after working with a humanitarian aid program called Mercy ships in West Africa. Scott experienced and documented what life was like in West Africa for 8 months in 2004 while assisting medical staff. While there, he realized that many people were earning less per year than the average bar tab in New York City. Many of the African citizens that visited the hospital Scott volunteered at were sick from drinking contaminated water. Their conditions were fully treatable conditions and would require just a 20 minute procedures if they were treated at a hospital in North America. Scott Harrison was changed by his experiences in Africa and decided to start making charity a part of his life. When he moved back home to New York City he founded charity: water.
